The Certificate in Trauma Counseling is open to any student enrolled in the M.A. in Counseling program at Lenoir-Rhyne.
Certificate Course Requirements
The Trauma Certificate consists of four courses, two of which can take the place of the required electives in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree program, or the one required elective in the School Counseling degree program.

COU 556 - Foundations of Trauma Counseling
This course provides an understanding of the phenomena of trauma and human responses to that trauma as well as the immediate aftermath of traumatic events. Discussion includes the basic neurobiology of trauma, identifying major types of trauma, the developmental impacts of trauma, and protective and risk factors that may be associated with individual and community responses to potentially traumatic events. Current and historical theoretical frameworks and conceptualizations of trauma, traumatic stress, and trauma recovery will be explored throughout the course. The association between trauma and psychological syndromes is a key component of this course.

COU 557 - Child Trauma Effects Across the Lifespan
This course provides an understanding of the environmental factors that contribute to and constitute adverse childhood experiences, and the effects on children’s development and subsequent behavior. Discussion will include attachment theory and the influence of attachment on development, historical and contemporary research on adverse childhood experiences and subsequent mental health and illness, and an overview of prevention and intervention, and treatment.
