Head Women's Basketball Coach


Location: Hickory, NC

The head women’s basketball coach reports to the vice president for athletics (or associate athletics director) and provides coaching expertise, leadership, management and administration of all aspects of a competitive NCAA program. This position ensures a positive and beneficial intercollegiate experience for student-athletes. The successful candidate will place the highest priority on academic integrity and a commitment to student-athlete success in both athletics and the classroom.

Essential Responsibilities and Position Accountabilities

  •  Provide leadership, organization and supervision for all team practices and competitions.
  • Oversee and evaluate assistant coaches, student assistants, graduate assistant coaches and volunteers in conjunction with the sport supervisor.
  • Organize and implement a successful recruiting program that attracts academically and athletically gifted prospects, with a strong commitment to retention, degree completion and academic success.
  • Manage and award athletic scholarship funds in coordination with the vice president for athletics and the director of NCAA compliance, adhering to university and NCAA guidelines.
  • Conduct all aspects of the program in accordance with NCAA rules, university policies and the department’s policy manual.
  • Promote an atmosphere of sportsmanship, professionalism and respect among coaches and student-athletes.
  • Prioritize student-athlete safety and welfare in all aspects of the program.
  • Manage team operations within the parameters of the annual budget and review all budget requests and fiscal needs.
  • Schedule team travel, practices and competitions in accordance with university policies, conference guidelines and NCAA bylaws.
  • Monitor and review student-athlete eligibility to ensure full compliance with governing rules and regulations.
  • Maintain positive and constructive relationships with university departments, including Admissions, Advancement, Budget, Finance and Student Affairs.
  • Participate in fundraising activities for the program in collaboration with the vice president for athletics.
  • Represent the university at professional meetings, admissions events, alumni gatherings, campus activities, athletic events and civic affairs.
  • Administer an effective community outreach program involving student-athletes to benefit the campus and surrounding communities.
  • Develop, coordinate and oversee comprehensive camps and clinics to boost participation and engagement.
  • Build and maintain relationships with alumni to promote a positive image of the program and university.
  • Attend and participate in athletic department meetings and NCAA rules education sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years of successful NCAA coaching experience preferred.
  • Comprehensive understanding of NCAA athletics required.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and verbal communication and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills; must be comfortable working in a flexible, team-oriented atmosphere with a positive attitude and sense of humor.
  • Unwavering commitment to academic integrity, inclusion, diversity, gender equity, student-athlete welfare, and NCAA and Title IX compliance.

Certifications and Licenses Required

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • NCAA compliance background check.
  • Annual completion of the NCAA coaches’ certification exam.
  • Current certifications in first aid, CPR and AED.
