Graduate Assistant, Center for Graduate Studies of Asheville


Location: Asheville, North Carolina

The Asheville graduate assistant will work closely with all members of the Center for Graduate Studies of Asheville’s administrative team. This team includes the dean and director, the associate director for community engagement, the assistant director of graduate enrollment and the administrative assistant. The position also works closely, on occasion, with Asheville-based graduate faculty. Primary responsibilities include office administration, staffing on- and off-campus University events, coordinating meeting schedules, participating in student outreach campaigns by phone and in person, researching business development opportunities, database management and other duties as assigned by the dean and director.

Duties Include

  • Assisting in calling campaigns to prospective students at various stages of the admissions cycle.
  • Scheduling appointments for prospective graduate students with the assistant director of enrollment management.
  • Gathering information on graduate inquiries and inputting it into databases for mailings and communications.
  • Supporting social media outreach efforts with posts, shares and follow-ups.
  • Entering appropriate student information into corresponding databases as needed for all phone, email and face-to-face communication with prospective students.
  • Assisting the administrative team with marketing and recruiting events such as open houses, education fairs and career fairs (some of which will be virtual).
  • Supporting outreach initiatives with regional agencies, businesses and schools to further inform their constituencies about program offerings.
  • Assisting the administrative team in planning and executing events and activities that aim to strengthen relationships with students, community leaders and employers. 
  • Helping to promote and market LR graduate programs offered in Asheville
  • Aiding in the day-to-day activities of the Center, including staffing the front desk, providing tours, assigning ID badges and parking stickers, mailing checks and special requests from faculty.

  • Professional phone, email and face-to-face communication skills.
  • Professional appearance and representation of Lenoir-Rhyne University.
  • Highly detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others in a small office environment.
  • Self-reliant and proactive; ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Genuinely passionate about Lenoir-Rhyne University and enthusiastic about sharing this impression with prospective students.
  • Experience with graphic design.
  • Experience researching and synthesizing data for operations support.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
  • Scheduling flexibility, including working occasional evening and weekend hours to support Enrollment Management and Center operational needs.

The graduate assistant will assist the center staff in planning and executing events and activities that aim to strengthen relationships with students, community leaders and employers. In addition, the graduate assistant will help promote and market the graduate programs offered in Asheville and aid in the day-to-day activities of the center. The graduate assistant will also work to promote the Lenoir-Rhyne Equity & Diversity Institute (LREDI), a non-degree training program that is based at the university’s Asheville campus.

Advantages of the Position: This position will offer the graduate assistant experience in public relations, event management and administrative duties. In addition, the graduate assistant will have the opportunity to meet and network with community leaders and employers. 

Time Commitment: 20 hours per week, schedule to be negotiated with dean and director

Compensation: Tuition remission for up to 15 credit hours during the academic year. Typically, the graduate assistant claims tuition remission for 3 hours during the summer semester, 6 hours during the fall semester and 6 hours for the spring semester. Continued employment during all three semesters is at the discretion of the dean and director.
