Program Overview


The Dietetic Internship program offers two program options, a nine-month certificate option and the Master of Science in Nutrition, Dietetic Internship option.

  • M.S. in Nutrition, Dietetic Internship Option
    • 16 month, 35 credit hour program during which interns fulfill coursework for Master of Science in Nutrition and 1,000 hours of supervised practice for the dietetic internship (920 hours at rotation sites and 80 hours supervised practice simulations).
    • Designed for interns who have completed an undergraduate degree and have earned a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) Verification Statement. 
    • Cognate options allow the intern to select an area of study related to career interest for additional focus (public health, sustainability or sports nutrition).
    • All didactic courses are online and asynchronous. 
    • Supervised practice rotations are in-person at intern-identified rotation sites.  Interns secure preceptors and supervised practice facilities in their own geographic location with the guidance and support of program faculty.
    • Community, Foodservice Management and Outpatient Clinical rotations are part-time.
    • Inpatient Clinical rotation is full-time for eight weeks during the summer.
  • Dietetic Internship Certificate Program Option
    • Full-time, nine-month program that begins each year in August
    • Designed for applicants who have earned a graduate degree and a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) Verification Statement
    • Interns complete 1,000 hours of supervised practice, including 960 hours at rotation sites and 40 hours of supervised practice simulations
    • Regional, faculty-arranged rotations are available for the Asheville/Western NC, Hickory/Foothills, Charlotte Area or South Carolina options 
    • A distance option is also available which provides the opportunity to complete your supervised practice rotations wherever you are located in the United States. The distance intern secures preceptors and supervised practice facilities in their own geographic location with the guidance and support of program faculty
    • Online orientation to learn about the program and prepare for supervised practice rotations in the following areas: Clinical (acute care facility/hospital), Community (health department, food bank or other community nutrition-related organization) and Foodservice management (school/hospital foodservice operation)
    • Online capstone activities

After completing the Dietetic Internship program, you will be ready to sit for the Registered Dietitian exam. Between 2019 and 2021, 92 percent of students in LR’s Dietetic Internship program passed the CDR Credentialing Exam for Dietitian Nutritionists within one year of the first attempt. Program Prerequisites


For the Dietetic Internship Certificate option, completion of a graduate degree and an earned Didactic Program in Dietetics Verification Statement is required.  For the Master of Science in Nutrition, completion of a bachelor’s degree and an earned Didactic Program in Dietetics Verification Statement is required.  Those who have successfully completed the prerequisite coursework from an ACEND-accredited program will have a Didactic Program in Dietetics Verification Statement.

New Credentialing Exam Requirements


Effective January 1, 2024, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will require a minimum of a master’s degree to be eligible to take the credentialing exam to become a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN). In order to be approved for registration examination eligibility with a bachelor’s degree, an individual must meet all eligibility requirements and be submitted into CDR's Registration Eligibility Processing System (REPS) before midnight Central Time, December 31, 2023.

In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in program(s) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Graduates who successfully complete the ACEND-accredited dietetic internship program at Lenoir-Rhyne are eligible to apply to take the CDR credentialing exam to become an RDN.

In most states, graduates also must obtain licensure or certification to practice. For more information about state licensure requirements visit the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

Program Requirements

Offered in Hickory, Asheville, Columbia and Online

The Dietetic Internship Certificate option requires 18 credit hours of course work and the Master of Science in Nutrition, Dietetic Internship option requires 35 credit hours of course work. Each program option prepares the dietetics internship student to sit for the RD examination. Students completing the Dietetic Internship program will be prepared for entry-level positions in dietetics.

Lenoir-Rhyne has hired Laura Crawley, Ph.D., as the inaugural vice president for mission, engagement and innovation. In addition, Crawley will hold the rank of non-tenure track professor of history. Crawley will begin her role July 1 and will report directly to Lenoir-Rhyne President Dr. Fred Whitt.
