Graduate Assistant, Advising Center


Location: Hickory, North Carolina

A part-time Graduate Assistant is sought to provide administrative support to the Lenoir-Rhyne Advising Center. The individual in this position will contribute to Lenoir-Rhyne’s mission to pursue the development of the whole person through helping students grow personally and gain insight into their behaviors and development of self.

Primary Duties and Tasks

  • Serve as the first point of contact for students who drop by the Advising Center and assist in assessing their needs.
  • Design and facilitate workshops and discussions on a variety of topics, including core academic skills (e.g., study strategies), executive function skills (e.g., time management and organization), and common academic challenges (e.g., procrastination), as well as general skills related to college learning.
  • Collaborate with first-year advisors to develop events and resources that support first-year students during their transition to college throughout the academic year.
  • Support office initiatives to connect with the first-generation college student population, assist in program development, and help plan First-Gen campus-wide events.
  • Manage a caseload of 15–20 academic probationary students during the spring semester.
  • Meet one-on-one with students whose individual academic challenges are better addressed outside of a group instructional setting.
  • Assist students in developing academic plans, setting goals, and holding themselves accountable.
  • Research and develop online tools, resources, and programs to support students.
  • Participate fully in the academic community by working closely with departmental faculty and staff to create workshops and training for specific departments and disciplines. Collaborate with academic departments, the Dean of Students Office, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Office of International Education, and Disability Services to target academic support offerings for at-need students.
  • Assist in coordinating all aspects of BEAR Central, primarily between the Advising Center and Academic Support Services.
  • Support academic staff by becoming CRLA certified, monitoring and assisting with the scheduling platform TracCloud, and facilitating makeup training sessions as needed.
  • Use social media to share BEAR Central updates with the student body and promote communication across all student success services and resources.
  • Be flexible and available to work daytime and evening hours based on department needs.
  • Work at promotional events on campus and complete basic administrative tasks, including copying, filing, and data entry.
  • Maintain records, provide reports, and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Familiarity with Lenoir-Rhyne’s campus learning culture preferred
