• Winter Weather Updates

    We are monitoring a winter weather system that will impact university operations this weekend and into early next week. 

    • STATUS: All three campuses will close on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. due to forecasted snow, ice and sleet. Campuses will remain closed through Monday, Jan. 26, with remote work and remote instruction on Monday. Essential operations will continue during the closure. NOTE: LR will operate under normal university operations on Friday, Jan. 23.
    • FACILITIES (Hickory): The library and fitness center will be closed Saturday through Monday. The Cromer Center dining hall is expected to operate on a normal schedule unless otherwise communicated.
    • RECEIVE UPDATES: Check LR email and the LR website for official university updates.
    • STAY CONNECTED: If you haven't already, download and enable notifications for the SafeZone app for timely safety alerts and campus information.

Whether you're a graduating student, family member or guest, these frequently asked questions and answers provide helpful information about the ceremony, tickets, guests, regalia, accessibility and more.

How many rain tickets do I receive and where do I pick those up?

  • Each graduate is guaranteed two tickets for Shuford Arena.
  • Rain ticket pick-up is at Graduation Fair, March 25-26. If you need to make other arrangements to pick up your rain tickets, please email Cameron at commencement@lr.edu.
     

Can I purchase more rain tickets?
No. Rain tickets are free, and each graduate receives two tickets.

When will a rain call be made?
As soon as possible. We also have the option to delay and wait for a passing storm or shower. Any announcements will be posted on the LR website.

Where and what time is check-in?
Check-in is at 4:30 p.m. in Shuford Arena lobby. You will check in by your last name and receive your name card. Keep his card with you during line-up. You will hand this to the reader as you cross the stage.

What time does the stadium open to guests?
Moretz stadium will be open at 4 p.m. for seating.

How many guests can I invite to our outside ceremony?
Unlimited

My guests need ADA accommodation, who do I contact?
Contact Deby Mitchell, director of disability service, by Friday April 25 at deborah.mitchell@lr.edu.

Is there a graduation rehearsal?
No. We have a simple “follow the leader” processional.

How long does commencement last?
Typically, 90 minutes

Is there a commencement live stream link I can share with friends and family who cannot attend in-person?
Yes. A live stream link will be posted to the LR website on the day of commencement.

I think I’m supposed to have an honor cord. Where do I pick that up?
Latin Honor cords can be picked up at check-in. All other honor cords or medallions are given out by your academic department or club/sport.

Can I decorate my cap?
Yes. Follow the instructions on page seven of the Commencement Handbook.

What should I wear under my gown?

  • Candidates should wear clothing appropriate for this significant event.
  • Improper dress may cause a candidate to be withdrawn from participation.
  • Cords, pins and medallions will be allowed only if symbolic of campus wide and programmatic academic honors.

How does the processional work since there is no rehearsal?

  • Once you check in you will be directed to sit in Shuford Arena with your major as directed. Please stay close by your seat and prepare for line-up.
  • As directed you will line up in the gym and walk out the doors to the football stadium and down the football tunnel on to the field. There will be staff and marshals all along the way to direct you.

My name is hard to pronounce, who needs to know?
At check-in you can touch base with our reader. You can also email commencement@lr.edu with proper pronunciation.

Do I receive my actual diploma at commencement?
No. That will be mailed to you this summer. Make sure the registrar has your most up to date address.

Furthermore, diplomas will not be released until all outstanding balances on student accounts are paid in full. Students must satisfy their financial obligations to the university before their diploma can be issued.

How do I access photos from the professionals?
You will be mailed and emailed proofs following the ceremony. If you have questions, contact Photo Specialties at 919.967.9576.
