Missing Student Policy

The university’s Missing Student Policy establishes procedures for responding when a student is reported or believed to be missing, with particular application to students living in university-owned or university-controlled housing.

Any student or employee who has reason to believe a student may be missing should immediately contact campus Public Safety at 828.328.7146 or through the SafeZone App. There is no required waiting period to report a missing student when there is reasonable concern for the student’s safety or well-being.

The policy outlines the university’s missing student response procedures, including efforts to locate the student, coordination with the Dean of Students office, Residence Life and law enforcement, and notification of designated emergency or confidential contacts when required. It also addresses notification requirements for students under age 18, emergency contact information for residential students, documentation of missing student reports and follow-up support once a student is located.
