ABOUT SPORTS MANAGEMENT
Sports is a leadIng industry in the United States requiring highly educated, well-trained, and business-minded individuals at many levels. The Sports Management major at Lenoir-Rhyne University is designed to provide students a comprehensive foundation of the business aspects and skills required to be successful in the sports industry.
The study of sports management is truly an interdisciplinary endeavor, requiring a rich understanding of many diverse areas of learning: Business management, the economics of sports, facilities and events management, sports law, marketing, and psychological and social issues faced in the industry are just a few of the areas in which the Sports management major must develop competency. In LR’s program, students also have the opportunity to focus on a particular area of interest to better prepare for a particular specialization in the industry. Professional internships are highly recommended and encouraged as part of the degree program, as they allow students to learn about different career options while gaining firsthand work experience.
The curriculum combines coursework in Health and exercise Science with Business and Economics; it is designed to coincide with the guidelines of the North American Society of Sports Management and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.
Qualified Sports Management students interested in continuing their education through graduate study can easily matriculate into several of Lenoir-Rhyne’s graduate programs, such as its Master of Business Administration. Through LR’s innovative Bridges to Dreams and Alumni Advantage programs, students who complete their undergraduate degrees at Lenoir-Rhyne University are able to complete their graduate degrees in shorter time and at significantly less expense.
LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM
The Bachelor of Arts in Sports Management program is designed for the student seeking employment in a variety of sport business and administration areas – at the academic, collegiate, or professional level. The qualified student can gain practical experiences working within the Lenoir-Rhyne Athletics Department and Intramural program in addition to area sports facilities and organizations such as the Hickory Crawdads baseball team, a Class A affiliate of the Texas Rangers franchise, local branches of the YMCA, and the City of Hickory Department of Parks and Recreation. Previous Sport Management students from Lenoir-Rhyne have also completed internships with NCAA Division I schools and conferences, NASCAR teams, and the Boston Red Sox Spring Training program, the Greater Hickory Golf Classic at Rock Barn – a PGA Champions Tour event, various club and travel sport organizations, and other local and regional golf and gymnastics venues and sporting good outlets.
Sports Management’s interdisciplinary program structure provides the strong foundation needed for high quality professionals to successfully enter the job market or further their study through graduate education. Opportunities will be available across the wide spectrum of the U.S. sports industry, a thriving part of our national economy. Opportunities in administration, management, public relations, marketing, recruitment, information—over multiple levels and across various industries, provide graduates excellent career options.
