Sustainability Studies Scholarship & Fellowships

Scholarship and Fellowship funding opportunities are available to prospective and current students. Applications are received on a rolling basis, and there is a priority deadline of May 5 for summer term, August 5 for fall term and December 5 for spring term. Application fees can be waived using code THANKS when applying for the Sustainability Studies program.

Permaculture Fellows also help plan events for the campus and community on permaculture and sustainability ideas and practices

Students intending to pursue these areas of study through the sustainability studies graduate program are encouraged to apply. Fellowships can also be used to support graduate studies projects focused on these areas.

Students who are awarded fellowships will receive tuition for up to six credit hours of school in a semester.

Awards are designed as first-semester and last-semester funding opportunities and are contingent upon acceptance into the sustainability studies graduate program.

Applying

To apply for a Fellowship in Permaculture Study and Practices, send a resume and a one-to-two page essay detailing your interest in permaculture study and practices and objectives for education in sustainability studies to Keith McDade, Ph.D. at keith.mcdade@lr.edu and copy Susy Chandler at susy.chandler@lr.edu.

This fellowship is made available through the university's Reese Institute, which was made possible by a generous gift from the estate of Tom Reese and functions on both the Hickory and Asheville campuses.

Through the fellowship, students are involved with many resume-building projects, providing hands-on experience in designing, developing and implementing sustainability initiatives that have real-world applications. Students work collaboratively and independently to develop the key competencies employers seek in sustainability professionals.

Qualified fellows receive a $600-$1,800 tuition reduction as compensation for 45-120 hours of sustainability-related work over the course of a semester.

Applying

To apply for a Reese Institute Fellowship, send a cover letter and resume to Keith McDade, Ph.D. at keith.mcdade@lr.edu and copy Susy Chandler at susy.chandler@lr.edu. The cover letter should detail why the Reese Fellowship would be beneficial for your development and why you would be a good candidate to receive this Fellowship.

The scholarship is competitive and awarded based on a committee review of application essays about what one hopes to achieve through an education focused on conservation and sustainability.

Scholarships are open to everyone and prioritization is given in the following order:

  • Trout Unlimited employees and other affiliates of Trout Unlimited
  • Students seeking either a Masters in Sustainability Studies or a Bachelors in Environmental Science in Policy who have committed to the Accelerated Master's Degrees program.
  • Students interested in conservation work in other degree programs.

Scholarship awards are $3,540 to $4,130 per year toward tuition and additional fees. This translates to six to seven credit hours per year. Scholarships are contingent upon acceptance into an LR program and continuation in good standing.

The scholarship is made possible through the Philip H. Bracewell, Sr., Conservation Education Endowment, established in honor of Philip H. Bracewell Sr., who lived in Hickory and was a founding director of Trout Unlimited and Ducks Unlimited North Carolina. Bracewell served for more than 16 years as Trout Unlimited national director and for 14 years as chairman of the Trout Unlimited Awards Committee. In 1984, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from Trout Unlimited National.
