Sacred Music Minor

A minor in Sacred Music offers preparation for a fulfilling career in church music ministry and/or education.

Become well-rounded musician through our minor in Sacred Music. You will gain a better understanding of the theological framework for the use of music in worship.

Our program can help prepare you for a career in church music ministry, and develop the requisite skills in organizing, playing, conducting and singing—skills necessary to shape music programs in today’s churches and places of worship.

The minor in Sacred Music is especially complementary to a major in religious studies, music, music performance, education and theatre.

A Sacred Music minor provides students with the opportunity to explore, understand and contribute to a vital part of Christian worship and heritage while supporting their own spiritual and intellectual growth. This interdisciplinary minor engages students intellectually in theology and history and spiritually by connecting them to the liturgical traditions of the church. In addition to coursework in Religion, Humanities and Music, students sing in the Chapel Choir and serve a local church via an internship. This minor prepares students for work as church musicians, and it can be paired with a major in Music or in other areas. A minor in Sacred Music requires 20 hours consisting of the following:
