Record-breaking support fuels Bears Give Back

Lenoir-Rhyne University celebrated its ninth annual giving day, Bears Give Back, with a three-day event from March 23-25 that brought together students, alumni, families, faculty, staff and friends to support the university. This year marked a new record for participation, with 1,514 donors contributing a total of $627,995.

A $100,000 challenge gift was unlocked when the number of donors surpassed 1,000, amplifying the effect of every gift and helping the total reach new heights. 

Gifts made during Bears Give Back have an immediate and direct impact on students, supporting scholarships, academic programs, athletics, campus ministries, and initiatives such as Kate’s Cupboard, which provides food and basic necessities to students in need. 

“Every year we are inspired by the generosity of the LR community,” said Stephanie Roberts, director of annual giving. “Seeing so many Bears come together over two days to support students and programs is both humbling and energizing.” With the challenge gift boosting the impact, Roberts noted that the participation reflected not just financial support but a shared commitment to the university’s mission to provide transformative educational experiences.

The celebration included an alumni event at City Walk in Hickory, activities in the Cromer Center and student-specific events, such as a campus-wide game of capture the flag. This year’s theme, Plant Your Flag for LR, invited donors to claim locations on campus. On Shaw Plaza and in Cromer Center, attendees enjoyed games, food, music and the chance to see the LR community in action. 

“It gives our donors the chance to have something on campus carry their name, even if just for a few days,” said Mary Ellen Sherrill, director of alumni and donor engagement. “Most of us can’t donate a building, but this allows everyone to make their mark in a meaningful way.” 

Students were also at the heart of the day’s success. Through the Student Loyal Bear Student Philanthropy Program, Avelyn Paulino ’26 and Norah Griffin ’26 led outreach efforts, encouraging peers to participate and sharing how gifts impact campus life. 

“As a student leader, I’ve seen how this program builds a sense of pride, ownership and connection to the university both during college and beyond graduation,” said Paulino.

The record-breaking number of donors illustrated how that early connection lasts a lifetime. 

Cat Niekro, vice president of institutional advancement, added, “This record level of participation reflects the momentum we are building as a community and the collective belief in what Lenoir-Rhyne provides for our students. Every gift helps move us forward.”
