Schwiebert has authored a book and several articles on the ritual practices of the early Christians, including prayer, the Lord's Supper and baptism. He is especially interested in how Christian identity played out in the ancient Roman world, using sociological and ritual studies to explore the first Christians and their writings. Schwiebert also enjoys reading and exploring religious texts and their interpretation with students.

An avid baseball fan and guitarist, he enjoys Crawdads baseball games at the L.P. Frans Stadium and making music around Hickory. He also enjoys kayaking and fishing on Lake Hickory.
