Diane Helsel is an assistant professor in the College of Health Sciences and faculty advisor for the dietetic internship program within the Solmaz Institute. Before joining Lenoir-Rhyne University in 2018, she was a faculty member at Bastyr University and the University of Pittsburgh, where she collaborated in research that focused on behavior change for weight management. Helsel is a proponent of active learning and uses various methods to encourage cooperative and collaborative participation in the seated and virtual classroom. In addition, she strives to enhance learner outcomes using a positive delivery approach.

Prior to academia, Helsel worked as a registered dietitian in clinical and community nutrition and nutrition consultation. Her professional interests include nutrition counseling for behavior change, sports nutrition and food science. In addition, she is a registered dietitian/nutritionist and American College of Sports Medicine certified health/fitness instructor.

Helsel is the recipient of the following awards: Pennsylvania Dietetic Association's Outstanding Dietetics Educator and Area 6 Dietetic Educators of Practitioners Outstanding Dietetics Educator.
