Creative Expression

Cantos Literary Magazine

Cantos is the literary magazine of Lenoir-Rhyne University. It offers an avenue for students to feature their works of creative writing, poetry, short-stories as well as photography and illustrations. Published annually by the English Department of the College of Arts and Letters, the magazine encourages creative expression and recognizes the talents of LR students.

The word canto refers to the principal form of division in a long poem and is derived from the Italian word for song.

Art Exhibitions

The LRU Art Department partners with the Carl A. Rudisill Library to feature exciting and stimulating art work throughout the academic year. Art exhibitions and competitions are held for students as well as local and regional artists and feature works of art created in various media including drawings, paintings, sculptures, and photography. Events are sponsored by the College of Arts & Sciences and the School of Arts & Letters.

Music

For more information about student music opportunities, contact Professor of Music, Dr. Christopher Nigrelli at Christopher.Nigrelli@lr.edu.

A Cappella Choir

The A Cappella Choir is Lenoir-Rhyne University's flagship choral ensemble which is open to all students by audition. A service and student organization of the University, the Choir is first and foremost an ensemble that learns the art of singing and engages in an active performance schedule.

The A Cappella Choir has traveled the country performing at countless national events and church services, and has taken twelve trips abroad. This past spring, the choir enjoyed a music-mission trip to Costa Rica, where it performed in a variety of venues and for worship with congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Costa Rica (ILCO). It also performed during a special reception honoring the president of Costa Rica who visited LRU in May. In September the choir performed for the installation of the 78th Bishop of the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). This was the third time the choir has been a part of such an installation service, having previously performed at the installation of two national Lutheran bishops. The choir is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year.

Chapel Choir

The Chapel Choir of the university provides music for weekly campus services in Grace Chapel on Wednesday mornings and for special services and occasions of the university and its sacred music program. The choir is occasionally conducted by students and accompanied by student instrumentalists, thus allowing students the opportunity to lead their peers and the campus community in worship.

Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble is an active performing ensemble dedicated to furthering students' abilities to play jazz and other popular styles.

The Jazz Ensemble is a reorganization of the "stage band" tradition, performing diverse styles of music including swing, bebop, blues, funk, Latin, and popular song. Membership in the Jazz Ensemble is open to all Lenoir-Rhyne University students by audition.

Marching Band

Lenoir-Rhyne University's Marching Band took the field in the Fall 2016, after a 24-year hiatus, under the direction of Professor Neil Underwood.

The University has a long tradition of excellence in marching bands. Many folks recall the days of the “Snappy Sixty” marching band and the legacy of its founding director, Robin Gatwood, This tradition was carried forward by directors Ralph “Gabe” Gabriel, Joseph Secrest, and Robert Flemming before the marching band was disbanded in 1991.

The “Spirit of LR” Marching Band continues the legacy established by Dr. Gatwood while making its own mark of excellence in the LR marching band tradition.

The band cheers on the team and provides entertainment at all home football games. It performs in exhibition for area high school band competitions and participates in local holiday parades such as Charlotte’s Novant Health Care Parade on Thanksgiving Day.

Membership in the “Spirit of LR” Marching Band is open to any LR student. Contact director Professor Neil Underwood with inquires at neil.underwood@lr.edu.
