LRU’s Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Program Receives $2,500 from Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation

HICKORY, N.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne University was recently awarded $2,500 from Piedmont Natural Gas in response to a grant application for funding captioning equipment for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing program. Specifically, the award will go toward the cost of equipment needed to add captioning to visual instructional presentations.

The Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation supports nonprofit organizations in communities throughout their service territories. Their history of support in the Catawba Valley region is notable, especially for United Way needs, as evidenced in their annual sponsorship of the Giving from the Heart awards luncheon, among other initiatives.

LRU instructor receives award from Los Angeles Press Club

HICKORY, N.C. - Dr. Amy H. Sturgis, an adjunct instructor in Liberal Studies at Lenoir-Rhyne University, recently received the 2015 award for Best Magazine Review/Criticism/Column, given by the Los Angeles Press Club at the 57th Southern California Journalism Award ceremony.

Sturgis, who has been teaching at LRU since 2010 received the award for her article, “Not Your Parent's Dystopias: Millennial Fondness for Worlds Gone Wrong”.

“Winning the award was a delightful and unexpected surprise for me,” Sturgis said. “It was an honor simply to be nominated; my fellow finalists were most impressive! Needless to say, I'm very grateful to the L.A. Press Club for recognizing my writing this way.”

Counseling alum selected to serve on NCSCA’s Board of Directors

Lenoir-Rhyne University graduate Jeff Bedford recently began his duties as Central Region Vice President on the North Carolina School Counselor Association’s Board of Directors.

Bedford, who received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from LRU in 2010, and a Masters in Counseling degree from LRU in 2013, was selected for the board through an application process earlier this year. He was originally selected to serve as an Emerging Leader, but assumed the role of Central Region Vice President after the member elected to that position had to unexpectedly resign.
