Rector and Dean of the Seminary

Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS) of Lenoir-Rhyne University welcomes nominations and applications for a dynamic and innovative leader to serve in the position of Rector and Dean of the Seminary. The Rev. Dr. Mary Hinkle Shore has announced her plans to retire at the end of the calendar year after four years of outstanding leadership. The Rector and Dean of the Seminary is a full-time appointment reporting to the Provost of Lenoir-Rhyne University, and working collaboratively with the Vice President for Mission, Engagement and Innovation. The primary duties of this position are to serve as the lead academic and church administrator for LTSS and to further develop LTSS as an exemplary seminary within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA) and among its ecumenical partners. The position start date would be on or before June 1, 2023.

Requirements for this position include an earned doctorate or terminal degree (PhD preferred) from an accredited university in Religious Studies, Theology, or a related field; academic credentials that merit appointment with tenure to the rank of Professor; ordination as an ELCA rostered minister of Word and Sacrament; experience with parish ministry; experience in higher education; and the ability to serve as the face of LTSS to the church, the academy, and the city of Columbia. Preferred qualifications include an appreciation of the history and mission of LTSS; evidence of a collaborative leadership style that embraces shared governance and builds a culture of trust among faculty, staff, students, alums and administrators across the university; demonstrated success in developing and implementing an innovative academic curriculum; and familiarity with the changing landscape of seminary education. We are particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated experience engaging with diversity through activities such as fostering an inclusive environment, working with students from diverse backgrounds, and/or incorporating diverse perspectives in scholarship and teaching.  

Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS) of Lenoir-Rhyne University was founded in 1830 and located to its current home in the Eau Claire neighborhood of north Columbia in 1911. One of seven ELCA seminaries in the United States, LTSS is the only ELCA seminary in the Southeast. Rich in tradition and welcoming to seminarians from many denominations, LTSS boasts a dedicated, collegial faculty and a broad alumni base of distinguished regional and national church leaders. LTSS is designated as a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) seminary and, as a seminary of the ELCA, is positioned to faithfully serve the synods of Region 9 strategically and uniquely.

Lenoir-Rhyne University is a co-educational, private comprehensive liberal arts institution founded in 1891, with its traditional campus located in Hickory, North Carolina, a town of over 40,000, and additional campuses in Asheville, North Carolina, and Columbia, South Carolina. Situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Lenoir-Rhyne is less than an hour drive from Charlotte. The university now offers over 50 undergraduate and 30 graduate degree programs to approximately 2,500 students.
