Director of Cornerstone Wellness Center and Mental Health Counselor


The Director of the Cornerstone Wellness Center at Lenoir-Rhyne University is responsible for coordinating and delivering mental health counseling services to students on the Hickory Campus and assisting with the extension of mental health support services to students on our campuses in Asheville and Columbia. The Director effectively manages and supervises counselors and staff and establishes and maintains effective clinical operations, including staff caseload, outreach/consultation programs, referral processes and procedures, clinical records, budgets, and daily operations.

The Director also supervises and coordinates student health services provided for the Hickory Campus by Catawba Valley Medical Group. As a licensed mental health counselor, the Director will provide limited short-term counseling services for a reasonable caseload of student clients.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise, coordinate, and assess Cornerstone Center staff, including licensed mental health counselors and counseling interns.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and assess student health services provided for the Hickory Campus by Catawba Valley Medical Group.
  • Manage external partnership to provide virtual counseling services to students on Lenoir-Rhyne’s Asheville and Columbia Campuses.

Essential Accountabilities

  • Effectively manage, train, supervise and assess Cornerstone Center staff, clinical operations, caseloads, outreach/consultation programs, referral processes and procedures, clinical records, budgets, and daily operations.
  • Supervise, coordinate, and assess student health services provided for the Hickory Campus by Catawba Valley Medical Group.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a nuanced understanding of under-represented groups and initiatives that enhance inclusive efforts.
  • Consult with and develop training opportunities for staff, administrators, faculty, and students as necessary to facilitate effective care for our students.
  • Contribute to and collaborate with professionals within and outside the Dean of Student Life office in developing programs awareness of prevention of psychological and behavioral problems, and that promote strengths and capacities for healthy student development.
  • Demonstrate leadership and insight on a broad range of high-risk student behaviors and how to treat them.
  • Effectively assess and intervene in student mental health crises and implement appropriate policies and practices, to include referrals to off-campus resources for long-term counseling and care, medical care, and medications.
  • Provide short-term, solutions-orientated counseling for a reasonable caseload of student clients.
  • Pursue opportunities to extend mental health and counseling support to students on the Asheville and Columbia Campuses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Masters level training, and fully licensed Professional Counselor/Clinical Social Worker/Psychologist. The candidate must hold appropriate licensure to serve as a site supervisor and to oversee counseling interns.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in limited short-term counseling/therapy work, preferably with young adults in an educational setting, with a strong focus on developmental and motivational skills, as well as behavioral based treatment modalities.
  • At least three years of progressive experience in leading and supervising counselors and interns.
  • Deep commitment to confidentiality and adherence to required laws and policies governing counseling services, especially in a university setting.
  • Ability to form and maintain strong relationships with faculty, staff, students, and community members.
  • Strong organizational, administrative, and supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated background in leading collaborative efforts among multiple constituencies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy and work with individuals at all levels of the university.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with a heightened attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical skills and problem solving/conflict resolutions skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education and Experience

  • Masters level training, and fully licensed Professional Counselor/Clinical Social Worker/Psychologist. The candidate must hold appropriate licensure to serve as a site supervisor and to oversee counseling interns.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in limited short-term counseling/therapy work, preferably with young adults in an educational setting, with a strong focus on developmental and motivational skills, as well as behavioral based treatment modalities.
  • At least three years of leadership experience in managing a counseling center and/or supervising counselors and interns.
  • Deep commitment to confidentiality and adherence to required laws and policies governing counseling services, especially in a university setting.
  • CPR and First Aid certification a plus.
  • Experience with multiple campuses a plus.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times. 
  • Ability to attend and preside over lectures and meetings.
  • Ability to travel with students, faculty and staff throughout campus.
  • Must be able to traverse various athletic grounds and facilities.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.

Work Schedule

  • Standard office hours M-F 8a-5p, with occasional evening and weekend work required to suit the needs of a residential college campus.
  • Subject to change based on university need, scheduled courses, and university growth.
