LR's Institute for Faith and Learning offers free class to public

Lenoir-Rhyne University's Institute for Faith and Learning is sponsoring weekly "Religion, Science and Ministry" classes, beginning Monday, Sept. 3, in the fellowship hall at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church.

Mindy Makant, Ph.D., LR associate professor of religious studies and director of the Living Well Center, will lead class sessions, which are free and open to the public. No registration is necessary. All sessions run each Monday night from 7 to 9 p.m., through Nov. 19.

"Religion, Science and Ministry" will explore how individuals can engage questions of science faithfully in a local congregation setting. The class sessions include:

  • Sept. 3: Why Do We Need to Have this Conversation?
  • Sept. 10: Setting the stage: Categories of Relationship
  • Sept. 17: Creation, New Creation, and Evolution
  • Sept. 24: Astronomy and Creation – Guest Speaker: The Rev. Dr. Brian Peterson
  • Oct. 1: Ecology and Climate Change
  • Oct. 8: No Class
  • Oct. 15: Technology and Community
  • Oct. 22: No Class
  • Oct. 29: Genetics and Human Identity – Guest Speaker: The Rev. Dr. Kim Carlson
  • Nov. 5: Panel Discussion
  • Nov. 12: Ethics: So What?
  • Nov. 19: Talking Science in Church

The IFL at LR endeavors to provide programming that contributes to and enriches a culture of the intellect that is theologically based. Its programs are directed to Christians of all traditions.
