Lenoir-Rhyne University's campus is receiving an upgrade on 7th Avenue, through a project initiated jointly between LR staff and the City of Hickory. Enhancements are being made to improve vehicle and pedestrian safety, according to Sarah Killian, communications specialist for the City of Hickory. The project, which will also include the planting of perennials on the medians, and new irrigation, is expected to be completed by fall.
LR provided funding of $72,000 for the project for materials needed for renovations, while the city provided approximately $65,000 of direct in-kind service through design and construction. Duke Energy is also contributing to the project, and will install new LED lighting along 7th Ave. at a discounted rate.
"Upgrades to 7th Ave. will complement current bond projects aimed at connecting citizens with amenities throughout the city," said Mayor Hank Guess. "The City of Hickory appreciates the strong partnership with Lenoir-Rhyne, and looks forward to working together on this and future projects to enhance our community."
