Lenoir-Rhyne University celebrates National Physician Assistant Week

Lenoir-Rhyne University's Physician Assistant (PA) Studies program invites the public to take part in several events planned in conjunction with National Physician Assistant Week, Oct. 6-12. All events are free and no registration is required.

To kick off the week, a potluck prayer breakfast will be held at 9 a.m., Friday, Oct. 6, in the Wayne B. Powell Health Sciences Complex (where the PA program is housed) located at 844 Highland Avenue South East, across from Hollar Mill. The breakfast will be hosted by students from the PA Class of 2019, and prayer will be led by University Pastor, the Reverend Andrew Weisner.

On Tuesday, Oct. 10, prospective students and the Hickory community are invited to attend a PA Open House event from 3 to 7:30 p.m. in the Health Sciences Complex. Participants can take a tour of the state-of-the-art facility, and meet with current students and faculty members to learn more about the PA program. An American Red Cross blood drive and silent auction will also take place during the open house.

Spirit Night will be held at the Chik-fil-A in Viewmont on Wednesday, Oct. 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. PA students will have an information booth set up where interested guests can get information on LR's PA program. Those who participated in the blood drive during the open house event will be entered into a drawing for a free meal.

Throughout the week, PA students will host a toiletry drive, collecting items such as soaps, shampoos, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant. Donations will be distributed to students in need in Alexander County. A collection box will be available at the Health Sciences Complex Oct. 6 – 12. Donations can also be dropped off at the PA information table, which will be set up in Shaw Plaza, Oct. 9 and 10, and the Cromer Center lobby on Oct. 11 and 12. The information table will provide informative materials from the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), as well as info on breast cancer awareness, and prevention methods for the top health concerns locally.
