Lenoir-Rhyne University invites friends, family, alumni, and the Hickory community to attend Homecoming 2017, Friday, October 6 through Sunday, October 8. Numerous events are scheduled throughout the weekend for guests of all ages to enjoy.
Friday, October 6
Homecoming activities begin on Friday with the 29th Annual Hanley H. Painter/Bear Memorial Golf Tournament at Lake Hickory Country Club – Catawba Springs Golf Course. Tee times are 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The entry fee is $125 per person or $500 for a group of four. Cost includes golf fees, lunch, and a gift bag. All proceeds will benefit the Lenoir-Rhyne Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund. For more information, or to register, call 828.328.7007.
The 16th Annual Bears Club Gala will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Moretz Mills Event Center. This semi-formal event will feature music, dancing, and fundraising, with both a live and silent auction. The cost is $50 per person and tickets may be purchased at the door. A Greek Life Reunion will also be held Friday night from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on the McCrorie Practice Field behind Moretz Stadium. This event is open to Greek alumni and Greek students only. Saturday, October 7
On Saturday, start off the day by visiting the Homecoming Welcome Center and Registration table, open from 9 to 11:30 a.m., at the McCrorie Practice Field main entrance. While registering, an opportunity to sign up for the Bears for Life Club or the President's Society, will be available.
The Sports Hall of Fame Ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. in P.E. Monroe Auditorium. Help celebrate the 2017 inductees in a ceremony honoring LRU's most prestigious athletes. Inductees include: Billy Joe Johnson, '57, Jody Petty, '91, Christi Cranford, '91, Jackie Gebhart, '95, Cory Morgan, '02. This event is free and open to the public.
At 10 a.m., gather on Stasavich Place in front of Shuford Gymnasium to watch the annual Lenoir-Rhyne Homecoming Parade. "Big Sammy," the train will be available for children to ride. The train will board at 9:45 a.m. in the parking lot across from the Quad. Passenger limit is 27. To catch the first ride on the train, email Cheryl.Abee@lr.edu. Following the parade, a dedication of new bricks on the Walk of Honor will be held. View this growing stretch of over 500 bricks honoring LRU alumni located to the west of the Martin Luther statue.
Prior to the football game, enjoy lunch with fellow alumni during the Alumni Association's Annual Alumni Lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the McCrorie Practice Field. Numerous activities will be provided for kids including a bounce house. Special seating will be provided for Golden Bears. No registration is required.
A Graduate Studies Tailgate will also be held prior to the game, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Those who graduated from one of LRU's master's degree programs, or those currently participating in a graduate program, are welcome to join in the tailgate for a pre-game barbeque lunch.
At 2 p.m. the LRU Bears football team will face off against Newberry in Moretz Stadium. Game tickets can be purchased at the gate. General admission tickets are $10. Children 12 and under are $5.
Sunday, October 8
The Homecoming celebration will conclude on Sunday with the 3rd Annual Homecoming Weekend Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. in Grace Chapel. The service and music will be led by fellow alumni.
