In times of trouble, the Lenoir-Rhyne family responds.
LR hosted its third annual Giving Tuesday – a national day of philanthropy which takes place the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving – with proceeds going toward the Student Crisis Assistance Fund and other university priorities.
Because LR alumni, faculty, staff, and the community responded to the need, the Giving Tuesday campaign exceeded its goal with a total contribution of more than 260 donors and $166,000. This year, LR received a $25,000 challenge gift for the Giving Tuesday campaign. All donations were matched dollar for dollar by an anonymous donor up to $25,000. Additionally, LR received an additional $10,000 match to encourage participation and help secure more than 200 donors for the campaign.
Established more than 30 years ago, the Student Crisis Assistance fund keeps students on the path to academic success during a personal and unexpected crisis. The fund helps any enrolled student with an unanticipated emergency that requires immediate financial assistance – a plane ticket, a week's supply of groceries, medicine, or textbooks for the semester.
"On behalf of Lenoir-Rhyne, I want to thank everyone for supporting our Giving Tuesday campaign and for supporting the needs of our students," said Cat Niekro, vice president for institutional advancement. "Because every gift makes a difference in the lives of these students, we are overwhelmed by and thankful for your support."
In 2018, Giving Tuesday at LR raised $82,197 with contributions from 125 people supporting students, academic programs, athletics, student services, and more. The increase in monetary support clearly showcases the impact of collective giving.
"A little financial assistance can have a big impact on a student," said the Rev. Andrew Weisner, campus pastor. "The generous donations from our alumni, family, and friends provide the financial resources for our staff to respond to urgent student matters that arise on a daily basis."
Giving Tuesday occurs once a year, but individuals interested in donating to Lenoir-Rhyne may do so any time by visiting lr.edu/give or by calling 828.328.7321. To receive credit toward 2019 tax deductions, gifts must be received by Dec. 31, 2019.
