Graduate student Jeffery Howard credits the LTSS with preparing him for ministry
From an early age, Jeffery Howard felt called to serve the Lord. His undergraduate studies included family and church education, Bible study, and youth ministry which have served him well at the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of South Carolina. He serves as Outreach Advocacy Specialist for the organization and its many partnering churches. In addition to his work, he is pursuing is Master of Divinity degree at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS) in Columbia, SC. "I knew the LTSS could better prepare me for the ministry and the next phase of my life," said Jeffrey. He appreciates the Seminary's holistic approach to ministry. "The program has afforded me new ways to build relationships outside of the four walls of the church, and is providing me the tools to think more critically and theologically as I approach ministry as well as life decisions."
He describes the overall environment of the Seminary as a "breath of fresh air." "The faculty goes above and beyond to ensure you receive the best education and learning opportunities available, Jeffrey said. "They walk with you during the process and provide the support you need not only in school but in your personal life as well." That support is especially important to Jeffrey – he and his wife, Tiffany, are new parents.
Jeffrey admits that it can be overwhelming trying to balance life, ministry, family, and school but, with guidance from God and support from professors and staff, he knows he will succeed.
"I would tell anyone considering going back to school that it is the best thing you can do to pursue your dreams and achieve your life goals." And Jeffrey continues to take his own advice. Following his graduation in May 2017, he plans to pursue his Ph.D. with a concentration on ethics and society.
"It's encouraging to know that you have professors and staff that are there to support you every step of the way, and it makes the experience at LTSS all the more meaningful."
