Derrick Murray

Derrick Murray joined Lenoir-Rhyne as chief information officer in May 2023. In this role, Murray provides leadership and vision for LR’s information technology resources to support academic quality, program growth, student success and administrative systems.
Murray’s 30-year career includes leadership positions in both higher education and corporate environments. Prior to joining LR, Murray provided technical and operational oversight of global infrastructure projects in finance and corporate treasury for Bank of America.
He previously served as associate provost for information technology and chief information officer at Winston-Salem State University. At WSSU, Murray helped modernize IT governance, centralizing data infrastructure and system capabilities and advanced IT security procedures while finding cost savings with external contracts. Previous to his CIO role, Murray was director of technology operations and deputy CIO at WSSU.
Prior to WSSU, he served as manager of hosting services and executive director of the UNC Shared Services Alliance for UNC General Administration (UNC System). Murray was charged with creating the foundation of ERP, disaster recovery and backup systems as a service for participating institutions within the 17-campus system. Murray began his higher education career as manager of network cervices at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Murray is known for his ability to build high-functioning teams, his technical knowledge and strong communication skills.
