LR Dance Marathon
Lenoir-Rhyne is hosting the first annual LRthon on March 24, 2017 in the Cromer Center Lobby from 7 pm - 1 am. For this event, teams of 6-10 people will spend six hours dancing to support the families and patients of Levine’s Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Each team must raise a minimum of $250.
The LRthon is being held in support of Miracle Network Dance Marathon, an organization that encourages students to fundraise for local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Campuses who host a Dance Marathon get to meet the patients and families of children who are directly impacted from the funds raised. In addition, the community event unites participants while working toward their philanthropic goals.
Every day, Children’s Miracle Network hospitals treat:
16,200 kids with trauma
935 kids with diabetes
2,128 kids with cancer
2,329 kids for surgeries
and 925 babies with NICU.
Last year alone, Miracle Network Dance Marathons raised more than $26 million dollars.
“Hi my name is Bryson I was born with half a heart. I have had 3 open heart surgeries already and I'm only 5 years old. I had my first surgery when I was only two days old, my second surgery was when I was only six months old. My third surgery was when I was three and that was the scariest one of them all. I had such a hard time at first, but with all the prayers that everyone said for me I made it. Unfortunately, the surgery couldn’t completely fix my heart. Now, two years later, it’s time for me to get a new heart.”
Update: Bryson is currently in patient at LCH waiting for his new heart. (His family has been there since 10/24/2016).
Katie was born with a cleft palate and an extremely rare genetic disorder that affects the pituitary gland, important for heart rate, thyroid, blood pressure, growth hormones and more. At the time of her birth, Katie was only the fourth person in the world diagnosed with this disorder.
Katie was placed on life support as soon as she was born and spent more than 100 days of her first year at Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH). This was completely unexpected as she was a full term baby with no known complications. Katie stayed in the neonatal intensive care nursery (NICN) until she was stabilized, with new diagnoses being brought to the forefront on a daily basis. Since birth, Katie has undergone four major surgeries and countless hospitalizations. She must also cope with diabetes, a deviated septum, midline dysplasia, and small optic nerves.
The Webbs have received excellent care at LCH, where several specialists follow Katie closely during all of her visits, particularly the endocrinologists. Katie has surpassed any initial limitations her doctors felt would hinder her. Along with prayers for a long and wonderful life, Katie and her family roll with the punches and rely on the specialists to lead and guide them. With the care and support from her LCH team, Katie is thriving.
The first Dance Marathon at Lenoir-Rhyne University will depend on the help of local and national sponsors. Sponsors have the chance to be an integral part of one of the most successful student-run philanthropies in the United States. These sponsors not only benefit the cause of Dance Marathon, but also help give local and national companies exposure and connection to an amazing organization.
