Lenoir-Rhyne University's Youth Chorus will present its annual spring concert this Sunday, April 30 at 4 p.m. in Grace Chapel.
The concert will feature music sung by the various LR Youth Chorus ensembles including the Minnesingers, Meistersingers, and Chamber singers. It will also include student soloists, and special guest instrumentalists. Cory Westby, Director of the LR Youth Chorus and Adjunct Instructor of Music, will direct the chorus performance, accompanied by pianist, Freda Herrell.
The choir will embark on its spring tour beginning May 5 through May 7, hosting performances at Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville, South Carolina and St. John's Lutheran Church in Atlanta, Georgia.
Founded in 1997, the LR Youth Chorus is currently is celebrating its 20th Anniversary during 2017. The choir has toured extensively in the United States and abroad. In the summer of 2007, 30 members of the advanced chorus group were privileged to attend the International Children's Choir Festival at Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, England, under the directorship of Henry Leck, from Indianapolis, Indiana, and David Flood, Master of the Choristers and Organist of Canterbury Cathedral. Of the six participating choirs, the LR Youth Chorus was chosen as the choir to lead.
The chorus regularly performs for churches, civic organizations, and in concerts with the LR A Cappella Choir. It has also performed twice with the Western Piedmont Symphony.
Children from ages eight to 18 are accepted by audition into either the beginning (Minnesinger) or advanced (Meistersinger) choruses. Both groups rehearse on Mondays, Minnesingers from 5:15 - 6:30 and Meistersingers from 7 - 8:30 during the school year. Both boys with unchanged voices and girls are welcome to audition. Open auditions for the 2017-18 season will be held from 2 - 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 19 and Sunday, August 20, in the Mauney Music Building on LR's campus. Prospective singers may audition anytime during those periods; no appointment is needed.
All performances are free and open to the public. No tickets are required, though a free-will offering will be received during the spring concert.
