LRU to partner with CVCC & BB&T Bank for community forum

Lenoir-Rhyne University's Office of Multicultural Affairs will partner with Catawba Valley Community College and BB&T Bank to present a community forum on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy on Wednesday, July 12 at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public and will be held in the East Wing Auditorium on CVCC's campus.

During the forum, attendees will be able to participate in a question and answer session led by Carla Vestal, immigration attorney at The Law Offices of Lyndon R. Helton, PLLC, located in Hickory. Vestal graduated from LRU with a bachelor's degree in Political Science and a minor in Sociology. She exclusively practices immigration and nationality law, serving clients from across the world. As a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Vestal frequently engages with the immigrant community in western North Carolina.

Erika Tiscareno Velasco, Administrative Assistant in the Office of Multicultural Affairs at CVCC, will speak with parents and students about coping with the challenges DACA beneficiaries face. She will also discuss the opportunities that exist for DACA beneficiaries wishing to pursue higher education. Velasco graduated from Belmont Abbey College in 2013, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and minor in English.

LRU's Office of Multicultural Affairs aspires to create a diverse community that welcomes people of different races, cultures, ages, genders, sexual orientation, religions, socioeconomic levels, political perspectives, abilities, opinions, values and experiences.

"Providing educational programming to members of our community is one of the services that the office of multicultural affairs offers," said Emma Sellers, Director of LRU's Office of Multicultural Affairs. "It is important that everyone is aware of their rights and opportunities provided by DACA, and any changes that have been made in the past few months. I am thankful to have the support of BB&T and the opportunity to partner with CVCC's Office of Multicultural Affairs to reach as many members of our community as possible."
