Lenoir-Rhyne Jazz Ensemble to perform 2017 spring concert

Lenoir-Rhyne University's Jazz Ensemble will present its annual spring concert on Sunday, April 30 at 5 p.m. in P.E. Monroe Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.

Musical features will include swing classics, Latin favorites, an original composition by regional composers, and a few ballads. Kendra Willford, an art faculty member at LRU, will perform My Foolish Heart on the trumpet, a song by Washington and Young.

Classic swing tunes such as Groovin' Hard, Splanky, Big Dipper, and Blues in Hoss Flat will represent the libraries of Basie, and Thad Jones. The Jazz Ensemble will also perform newer contemporary selections such as Orilla Del Mar by Jim Marton and Fruitcake by Jeff Coffin, a Nashville-based saxophonist who tours with the Dave Matthews Band among numerous others. Snipe Hunt and Leaving are two pieces from Asheville-based composer and arranger, Dr. Dave Wilken. Central Park West, one of the more challenging pieces of the program, is an original composition by John Coltrane, and arranged by John Fedchock.

The LRU Jazz Ensemble is directed by David Wortman, adjunct instructor of music. Membership in the ensemble is drawn from current LRU students, alumni, and community members.
