CEO of BB&T Next Speaker in Aspects of Leadership Program

Kelly KingHICKORY, N.C. — The Lenoir-Rhyne University Business Council and the Alex Lee Foundation present the next Aspects of Leadership program on Wednesday, February 13th at 6:00 pm in the Fintel Classroom in the McCrorie Building on campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Mr. Kelly King, CEO of BB&T Corp will speak on leadership in the business world.  In light of economic conditions and recent events, this will sure to be a fascinating and timely address.  King serves as Chairman and CEO of BB&T Corporation. He began his career with BB&T by joining BB&T’s Management Development Program in 1972 and has served in many roles, including manager of its Central and Metropolitan regions, Raleigh city executive, Charlotte business services manager, Statesville consumer lending manager, and banking manager for BB&T’s branch network.
In January 2009, King was named a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and served in that capacity until 2011. He has served as chairman of BB&T Corporation since January 2010; president and chief executive officer of BB&T Corporation and chairman and chief executive officer of BB&T since January 2009. Aspects of Leadership Program Kicks Off 2013 Season

HICKORY- The Lenoir-Rhyne University Business Council and the Alex Lee Foundation will sponsor the Aspects of Leadership program on Wednesday, February 6th at 6:00 pm in the Fintel Classroom in the McCrorie Building on campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Wayne PowellDr. Wayne Powell, president of the university, will begin the 2013 Aspects of Leadership lecture series. He will give an address on leadership in general. Leadership is an elusive concept, difficult to define and impossible to measure. It is more noticeable in its absence than in its presence. When it is in place, things seem to go well and the organization thrives, but when it is absent, bad things happen. It is in this vein that the Aspects of Leadership series was started so that we may practice leadership more effectively. (more…)

Novelist and Screenwriter John Burnham Schwartz To Speak at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. — The fifth speaker in the Lenoir-Rhyne University Visiting Writers Series will be John Burnham Schwartz. Schwartz will appear on the Lenoir-Rhyne campus in Belk Centrum on Thursday, February 7th at 7:00 p.m. – no tickets or reservations required.

Schwartz is a recipient of a Lyndhurst Prize for mastery in the art of fiction. His journalism has appeared in publications such as The New Yorker, the New York Times Book Review, the Boston Globe, and Vogue. Schwartz has taught fiction writing at Harvard, the University of Iowa Writers Workshop, and Sarah Lawrence College. He is also the literary director of the Sun Valley Writers Conference, which is one of the leading literary festivals in the United States. (more…)

National Theologian to Visit LRU Campus

HICKORY, N.C. — The Lenoir-Rhyne University Institute for Faith and Learning will welcome Dr. Vigen Guroian to campus on Thursday, February 14th at 7:00pm to present, “Gardening and Faith: Ecological Musings from the Garden.” This event will be held in the Belk Centrum on campus and is free and open to the public.

Dr. Guroian is an Orthodox theologian and renowned essayist. He has been a member of the faculty of a number of colleges and universities including Loyola College of Baltimore, University of Virginia, and St. Mary’s Seminary and University. He is author of a number of books, many on morality and ethics based on Orthodox Christian teachings. He is currently a Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia. He has appeared on NPR’s “Talk of the Nation,” “Speaking of Faith” and “On Being with Krista Tippett.” (more…)

Lenoir-Rhyne A Cappella Choir Prepares for North Carolina Tour and Home Concert

A Cappella Choir Tour

HICKORY, N.C. — The Lenoir-Rhyne University A Cappella Choir and College Singers, directed by Paul D. Weber, will perform on tour in North Carolina February 24 to March 4 and will present their Home Concert in Hickory on Monday, March 4 at 7:30 pm.  Accompanying the choir will be Jeana Neal Borman, Lenoir-Rhyne University collaborative artist, and Brandon Burns, junior sacred music major.

Repertoire sung by the choir will include “Sing Ye Praises to Our King” by Aaron Copland, “Come, Let Us Sing unto the Lord” by Emma Lou Diemer, “Arise, Shine!” by Paul Weber, “Richte mich, Gott” by Felix Mendelssohn, “Tenebrae factae sunt” by Johann Michael Haydn, “The Heavens are Telling” by Franz Joseph Haydn, “The Call” by James Gossler, “Pie Jesu” by Andrew Lloyd Webber, “Ride On, King Jesus” by Moses Hogan, “O Day Full of Grace” by F. Lenoir-Rhyne University Announces Last Push for Addition to Minges Science Building

HICKORY, N.C. — Lenoir-Rhyne University will announce the beginning of a campaign for the Science Building on Friday, February 1, at 3p.m. in front of the Minges Science Building on campus (Note: this date is rescheduled from the original date of Jan. 25). In the event of inclement weather, it will be held in the portico of the Lineberger Building.  This event is intended to introduce the final phase of fundraising for the $25 million, 35,000 square foot addition to the Minges Science Building and a complete renovation of the existing building.  Faculty, students, and the Hickory community are invited and encouraged to attend this important event.

Dr. Wayne Powell, President of Lenoir-Rhyne University, said “In building the Science Complex, Lenoir-Rhyne is preparing the next generation of leaders for this region. In addition, this construction project will have a significant economic impact on the local economy.”  The first phase of the project will be a 35,000 square foot addition to the existing Minges Science Building.  (more…)

High School Scholars Academy Information Session Rescheduled to Thursday, January 31

HICKORY — The information session for the Lenoir-Rhyne University High School Scholars Academy that was canceled on Thursday, January 17 because of inclement weather has been rescheduled for Thursday, January 31. The session will be held in room 213 of the McCrorie Center on the L-R campus.

The High School Scholars Academy, which began in 2007, is designed for high school students who wish to pursue a more advanced academic program for their senior year of high school. Students selected for the program will have the opportunity to enroll in English IV Honors plus three college classes in the fall and AP English (or an approved online class) plus three college classes in the spring.

Applications for the 2013-2014 school year are due in February 2013. First preference for admission will be given to students enrolled in the Catawba County, Hickory Public, or Newton-Conover school systems. If space is available, the University will also consider students from private schools, home schools, and other school systems. (more…)

Lenoir-Rhyne University to Celebrate Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Lenoir-Rhyne University, in collaboration with other community organizations, will celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with several events in January. On Monday, January 21, Lenoir Rhyne will hold its MLK Day celebration.  This event will be held at the P.E. Monroe Auditorium on campus.  The event is free and open to public.  Mr. Dewey Harris, Assistant County Manager of Catawba County, will be the guest speaker.

Other events celebrating the life and the legacy and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King include:

LR student organizations will volunteer their time at five local organizations – Centro Latino, The Corner Table, The Hickory Soup Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity Re-store Store, and the Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministries.  (more…)

View Stars, Planets and the Moon at LRU

Lenoir-Rhyne University in conjunction with the Catawba Valley Astronomy Club is sponsoring a “Public Observing Night.” This event will be held on Friday, January 18th, weather permitting, at the Minges Science Building Observatory on the L-R campus. This free event will begin at 7:00 pm and conclude at approximately 10:00 pm.

The public is invited to come to the top of the Minges Science Building where several telescopes will be set up in addition to the 12.5 inch Cassegrain telescope in the observatory dome.  To access the rooftop observatory, enter the building then take the elevator to the 4th floor and come up the steps.

Celestial objects to be observed will include Jupiter and its moons, a first quarter moon, and perhaps Uranus and other celestial wonders such as star clusters and nebulae.

Harlem String Quartet to Bring Blend of Concert Music to Lenoir-Rhyne Campus

HICKORY, N.C. — Lenoir-Rhyne University is pleased to welcome the Harlem String Quartet to campus on January 18, 2013. As part of the LR Concert Series, “String Quartets Old and New,” is a free concert that will be presented at 7:30pm in the P.E. Monroe Auditorium on campus.

The Harlem Quartet, praised for its “panache” by The New York Times, is currently the resident ensemble in the New England Conservatory of Music’s Professional String Quartet Program. Their mission is to reach diverse audiences through concerts and outreach with programs that are wonderfully varied, from classics to works commissioned by living American composers. (more…)
