HICKORY, N.C. – Lenoir Rhyne University recently hosted a Kids In College STEM Camp for middle school students. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics skills were creatively reinforced through teachers, LR Master of Arts in Teaching students and local engineers.
The camp was a mixture a daily brain challenges, group activities, presentations and fun. Students were presented project challenges by engineers from Corning Cable Systems, and were tasked with creating their own inventions based off life experiences and needs.
The camp concluded with groups of students introducing their products at the final “Bear Tank” presentation. Inventions included a solution for having the perfect backpack, wearable self-charging cell phone devices, new apps for homework and bullying prevention, hiking trail mix snack machines, hair products, and even a fashionable toilet seat cover. The students showed tremendous creativity, skill, and talent as they met the challenges placed upon them during the camp.
