HICKORY, N.C. —Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Rebecca Payne and Jeffrey Fisher are this year’s Parliamentary Debate National Champions.
They won the title this week when Lenoir-Rhyne University’s Debate Team traveled to Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois for the 32nd Annual Novice National Championship Forensic Tournament held from Monday through Wednesday.
NIU hosted 25 schools for the competition including Cornell University, Loyola University and the University of Illinois-Springfield.
Not only did LR bring back its first ever national championship in our first year of competition in more than 20 years, but the university also won the 8th Top Speaker Award, which went to Jeffrey Fisher, the 10th Top Speaker Award, which went to Rebecca Payne and the 5th Place Sweepstakes Award for Division III. Divisions are based on the number of students brought to the competition—LR brought two.
It was a close competition—the difference between the 10th Top Speaker and 1st Top Speaker was 5 speaker points.
LR’s next national championship competition will be held on Monday, March 21 through 23 at the Pi Kappa Delta Nationals at IUPUI in Indianapolis.LRU News | No Comments
