HICKORY, N.C. — Lenoir-Rhyne University is pleased to welcome Jon Irabagon’s Jazz Trio to campus on November 22, 2013. As part of the LR Concert Series, “Rising Star” is a free concert that will be presented at 7:30pm in the P.E. Monroe Auditorium on campus.
Irabagon won the Thelonious Monk Saxophone Competition in 2008, and has since been gaining increasing visibility in the jazz world. With a love for all styles of jazz, Irabagon has the ability to seamlessly merge them together, creating one unique voice. Jon was nominated as “Tenor Saxophone of the Year” and “Up and Coming Artist of the Year” in the 2011 Jazz Journalists’ Awards, and was named Rising Star Alto Saxophone in Downbeat Magazine, as well as one of “New York City’s 25 Jazz Icons” in Time Out New York. Jon will be joined on stage by Mark Helias, bass, and Barry Altschul, drums.
Helias and Altschul were a part of Irabagon’s first record, “Outright!”, which features six of Irabagon’s compositions as well as an unruly take on Dizzy Gillespie’s classic bebop tune “Groovin’ High.” Released in May of 2008, the album was called “one of the most impressive debuts of recent times,” in All About Jazz Italy.
