Wed Oct 23 2013

HICKORY, N.C.- (Tuesday, November 12, 2013
 P. E. Monroe Auditorium, 7 p.m.)

One of the greatest writers in English history is coming to Lenoir-Rhyne University this year.

A master of the written word, English novelist A.S. Byatt earned a spot on The Times’ list of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945. Author of 11 novels and countless short stories and articles, Byatt’s works are world-renowned and she’s won the Booker Prize and the Shakespeare prize along the way.

She is known best for her novels, which include “Possession: A Romance,” and her short fiction, which appears regularly in The New Yorker and other literary magazines. “Possession” is a love story that tells the tale of two young scholars who come together while researching a pair of Victorian-era poets.

The movie adaptation of “Possession” starred Gwyneth Paltrow and Aaron Eckhart and was released in 2002 to critical and box office acclaim.

Byatt’s most recent novel, “Ragnarok: The End of the Gods” was published in 2011. It chronicles the finale of the mythological Norse gods.

A distinguished critic as well as a writer of fiction, Byatt was honored in 1999 when she was made a Dame of the British Empire. The declaration recognized her written works and her contributions to the United Kingdom.

This event is open to the public, and free for all guests. No tickets or reservations are required.
