Debate team Domination – LR’s revived team triumphant in Georgia opener

Lenoir-Rhyne University’s debate team travelled to The University of North Georgia in Oakwood, Ga. for a national college competition that drew students from across the US.

LR’s eight debaters won 15 “speaker awards” based on the talents of the individual debater. They split up into four two-person teams for the team events where they won first and third place in the novice category.

Nine different colleges and universities fielded a total of 24 teams for the event.

This is the first time LR’s debate team has travelled for a competition in 23 years, but after the success this year, it won’t be the last, said debate team coach Cade Hamilton.

“Discovering a place where I can be successful and making friends among my team made it all worthwhile,” said winning debater Micah Rufsvold.

The debate team received a list of potential debate topics a week before the event. At the competition, they were given a topic and assigned a side to defend and then competitors had 20 minutes to prepare their arguments.

“It was a lot of fun, and the team really came together to help each with the research,” Hamilton said.

Lenoir-Rhyne’s debate team was reinstated last year after nearly a quarter century of inactivity. It was a team-building year during which the focus was on learning the fundamentals of debate and holding a series of on-campus debates. The team grew in number and skill as they prepared for this, their first year of intercollegiate competition since 1990.
