High Achieving Area High School Students Combine College Courses with Senior Year Experiences

HICKORY, N.C. — Lenoir-Rhyne University welcomed its seventh class of High School Scholars to campus this week.  These are high achieving high school seniors who attend classes on the LR campus.  They take high school English IV Honors plus three classes at the University.  Students are selected through a competitive application process.

This year’s 30 scholars come from eight high schools around the area. The 2013-14 High School Scholar participants are:  Bandys High School:  Maria Carinci, John Moore, Cassidy Peeler, Rachael Reese, Jared Turner; Bunker Hill High School:  Abbey Gantt, Caitlyn Killian; Discovery High School:  Olivia Abernethy, Ayanna Cunningham; Fred T. Foard High School:  Samuel Greene, Pierce Hayes, Cameran Kerley, Kathryn Nelson, Tanner Place, Beth Robinson, Daniel Robinson,  Sarah Shugar; Hickory High School:  Taylor Barnhardt, Danielle Cline, Kailey Durham, Emily Hefner, Caitlin McKee, Peyton Priola; Maiden High School:  Amber Korn; Newton-Conover High School:  Abbey Hayes, Ashlyn Karre, Andrew Thavychith; St. Stephens High School:  JT Crawford, Alexandra Felkins,Claire Neuville.

The High School Scholars Academy has 30 spaces for the 2014-2015 academic year.  Applications will be accepted through February 14, 2014.  First preference for admission will be given to students enrolled in Catawba County, Hickory Public, or Newton-Conover school systems.  If spaces still remain, LR will consider applicants from private, home schools, and other systems.
