HICKORY, N.C. — Lenoir-Rhyne University is pleased to welcome award-winning performance poet Joshua Bennett to campus on Friday,March 22 at 7:00pm in the Belk Centrum. The LRU Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs and the Lineberger Center for Cultural and Educational Renewal are sponsoring this event, which is free and open to the public.

Bennett is a 24-year-old “spoken word artist” from Yonkers, N.Y. He has recited his original poetry at the Sundance Film Festival, the NAACP Image Awards and President Obama’s Evening of Poetry and Music at the White House. He has performed alongside former U.S. poet laureates Billy Collins and Rita Dove at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ.  In addition, he was a featured poet on the original cast of the HBO series “Brave New Voices.  Joshua also was commissioned to create an original work for Ralph Lauren’s RUGBY ad campaign, The Rugby Poets Club and Reebok’s online magazine, We R Classic.

Bennett graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania, earning a B.A. in English and Africana studies. In addition to receiving a Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship, Bennett was also awarded a Marshall Scholarship and earned his Master of Arts in theatre and performance studies from the University of Warwick in the U.K. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in English from Princeton University.

Though billed as a poet, Bennett explains that there is a difference between writing poetry and the spoken word, “I think they’re two radically different texts. If you read one of my poems as opposed to seeing it performed, it’s drastically different based on what I do with inflection and how I get into a different character in certain parts of the piece.”
