Lenoir-Rhyne to Welcome United States Navy Commodores

Tue Oct 23 2012

HICKORY, N.C. — Lenoir-Rhyne University is pleased to invite students, faculty, and members of the community to attend a free concert with the United States Navy Jazz Commodores. The ensemble will be performing in P.E. Monroe Auditorium on Sunday, November 11th at 3:00 p.m.  Free tickets are required for general admission seating. Go to for more information.

Jazz is America’s music and the U.S. Navy Band Commodores, the Navy’s premier jazz ensemble, have been performing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for over 40 years. Formed in 1969, this 18-member group continues the jazz big band legacy with some of the finest musicians in the world. Led by Senior Chief Musician Philip Burlin, the Commodores’ mission includes public concerts, national concert tours, ceremonial support in honoring our veterans, jazz education classes and clinics, and protocol performances for high-level military and civilian government officials.

One hour prior to this event, the Catawba County Chapter of the Alumni Association will hand out ribbons and boutonnieres to those who have served or are directly related to someone who has served our country (these are first come / first served). Look for the table in the lobby of P.E. Monroe Auditorium.

The concert is free and open to the public. To ensure a spot at the concert, free tickets are available via voucher request, available at Doors to the performance open at 2:30 p.m., and unfilled seats will be released to those with out tickets at 2:45 p.m.

For additional information, go to or call the L-R music program at 828-328-7147. Additional information on the Navy Band can be found online at
