Mon Aug 27 2012

Zach WahlsLenoir-Rhyne University’s Lineberger Center for Cultural and Educational Renewal and the LR Campus Activities Board presents An Evening with Author Zach Wahls. Best known for his moving address in front of the Iowa House Judiciary Committee regarding a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in that state, Wahls tries to answer the question, “What makes a family?”

Wahls will speak on the Lenoir-Rhyne campus in the Belk Centrum on Monday, September 10th at 8:00pm. This is a free event open to the public.

Wahls tried to answer that very question when he testified before the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in January 2011. The son of two lesbian mothers, the 19-year-old University of Iowa engineering student had no idea that his heartfelt testimony that day would spread like viral wildfire, and even land him on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Lenoir-Rhyne University & LTSS Sign Merger Agreement

Tue Mar 27 2012

This is the story of two great institutions building a partnership that is being watched around the country. One is a surprisingly ecumenical seminary preparing mostly Lutheran – but also Baptist, Methodist, AME and Episcopal – ministers on its Main Street campus in Columbia, SC. The other, 140 miles north, is a rising university in Hickory, North Carolina.

Come July 1, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS) will officially join forces with Lenoir-Rhyne University in what some say is a “game-changing” merger between the two. Both are affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and both have deep roots in the Carolinas.

Through this merger, LTSS will become part of the School of Theology of Lenoir-Rhyne University, but will maintain its historical identity and location in Columbia, SC.  This is the first such marriage among the 26 colleges/universities and eight seminaries of the ELCA. (more…)

Lenoir-Rhyne University and Southern Seminary Joining Forces

Tue Mar 29 2011

Following a feasibility study, the boards of Lenoir-Rhyne University and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS), have recommended that the institutions enter into a formal collaborative partnership leading to a merger of the institutions. The plan calls for the seminary to become the university’s school of theology and remain a seminary located in Columbia, South Carolina.   Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary will maintain its name and own identity while integrating with the larger university system. The study leading up to this recommendation was coordinated and fully supported by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), which supports and partners with both institutions.

The proposed merger will be the first such combination of a Lutheran seminary with a university.  The new model was developed by LTSS and LRU in order to combine the strengths of both institutions and to leverage their respective reputations in a manner that LTSS can become the premier Lutheran seminary in the country. Lenoir-Rhyne University and Southern Seminary exploring partnerships

Sat Aug 28 2010

The boards of Lenoir-Rhyne University and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary (LTSS), along with the ELCA, will be conducting a feasibility study to determine possible partnerships between the two Carolina institutions that will enable each to draw upon the academic and theological strengths of the other and will serve a broader audience.

Preliminary discussions recently began when it became clear that the two institutions had similar goals. The possible partnership would allow each school to capitalize on its unique strengths to provide the best theological education in the South. For example, LRU offers numerous professional programs and several master’s degree programs. LTSS offers theological studies and a variety of contextual learning experiences.  By bringing these skills together students would have many more opportunities for advanced study.  “We are fortunate that both of these institutions are excelling in their respective areas,” stated Wayne Powell, LRU president. “And because of this we are excited about exploring cooperative agreements to provide the best theological education in the south.”
