Jumpstart 2010: Course Registration Instructions and Materials for Freshmen

INSTRUCTIONS FOR BUILDING A SCHEDULE

In order to build some sample schedules for Fall, you will need the following materials:

You should look over these materials carefully as this can be a bit confusing the first time around.  Don’t panic if it becomes overwhelming… this is just to get you started!  We’ll be here to help you when you arrive for Jumpstart in June!

If you have taken courses at a local college while in high school, you must forward your official transcript from that college to LR.  Additionally, if you have AP or other credit such as IB or CLEP, you must have the official scores sent to LR.  We cannot grant transfer credit unless we have official documentation.

In planning a schedule of classes for the Fall, you need to consider the following:

1.    All First-Years (Freshmen) must take ENG 131 unless you have transfer credit for Composition I from another college, from AP course credit, or if your SAT Critical Reading score is lower than 400 or your ACT English score is lower than 18.

a.    If you have transfer or AP credit, you might want to take ENG 231, if available.
b.    If your SAT Critical Reading score is lower than 400 or your ACT English score is lower than 18, you must take ENG 105 (see course description).

2.    All First-Years (Freshmen) must take FYE 191 (See Advising Guide to the New Core for the listing).

3.    Many majors require that you begin taking major courses in your first year.  See below to see if you are required to take anything other specific courses:

a.    Pre-Nursing majors must take BIO 281 and Lab.
b.    Biology majors must take BIO 105 and a Lab and should take a math course.
c.    Music majors must take MUS 090, 111 and the appropriate sections of MUS 131 and 151.
d.    Chemistry majors must take CHE 103 and Lab and should take a math course.
e.    Physics majors must take PHY 211 and should take a math course.
f.     Pre-Medical Science majors should take BIO 105 and Lab.
g.    Any Education majors (Elementary, B-K, etc) should take PSY 100
h.    Any Business majors (Management, Accounting, etc.) should take one or both of ECO 121 and CSC 175.
i.     Computer Science and Information Technology majors must take CSC 120.
j.     Math majors should take MAT 165 or 166

6.    If none of the majors above apply to you, choose any other courses using the Advising Guide to the New Core.  Don’t forget you have to take English and FYE 191!

7.    Plan to take 14-17 credit hours (12 is the minimum full time load).  We strongly recommend that new students do NOT take the maximum load of 18 credit hours.

8.    Use the Daily Time Grid to make sure your chosen courses do not overlap.

We suggest making two or more schedules using the Daily Time Grid and bringing them with you to Jumpstart.  On that day you will meet with a faculty advisor, go over your schedules, and then register for the semester.  The advisor will be able to answer questions you may have about courses or your desired major, as well as to help you navigate through any closed courses (courses already filled to capacity).

If you are completely overwhelmed by this information, please contact your Enrollment Services Counselor at 800.277.5721 or reach them by email or online chat by visiting http://www.lr.edu/admissions/staff/meet-the-staff.  If you can’t reach your personal counselor, feel free to contact anyone in the Enrollment Management Division for assistance.

We look forward to hosting you on campus this June!
