Freshman Jumpstart 2009: Course Registration Instructions and Materials

    INSTRUCTIONS FOR BUILDING A SCHEDULE

In order to build some sample schedules for fall, you will need the following documents.

You should look over these materials carefully as this can be a bit confusing the first time around.  Don’t panic if it becomes overwhelming… this is just to get you started!  We’ll be here to help you when you arrive for Jumpstart in June!

In planning a schedule of classes for the fall, you need to consider the following:

    1.    All freshmen must take ENG 131 unless you have transfer credit for Composition I from another college, from AP course credit, or if your score on the SAT English is less than 400.

    a.    If you have transfer credit, you should attempt to take ENG 231 (if available… if not, you will take it in the Spring semester)
    b.    If your SAT score is lower than 400, you should consider taking ENG 105 (see course description).

    2.    All freshmen must take LR 101.

    3.    Many majors require that you begin taking major courses in your freshman year.  See below to see if you are required to take anything other specific courses:

    a.    Pre-Nursing majors must take BIO 281 and Lab
    b.    Biology majors must take BIO 105 and a Lab and should take a math course
    c.    Music majors must take MUS 090, 111 and the appropriate sections of MUS 151 and 131
    d.    Chemistry majors must take CHE 103 and Lab and should take a math course
    e.    Physics majors must take PHY 211 and should take a math course
    f.    Pre-Medical majors should take BIO 105 and Lab
    g.    Any Education majors (Elementary, B-K, etc) should take PSY 100
    h.    Human Occupational Studies majors (OT) must take CHE 101 and Lab
    i.    Any Business majors (Management, Accounting, etc) should take ECO 121 and CSC 175
    j.    Computer Science and Information Technology majors must take CSC 116
    k.    Math majors should take MAT 165 or 166

    4.    If none of the majors above apply to you, choose any other courses using the Core Curriculum as a guide.  Don’t forget you have to take English and LR 101!

    5.    Plan to take 14-17 credit hours (12 is the minimum full time load).  We strongly recommend that new students do NOT take the maximum load of 18 credit hours.

    6.    Use the Daily Time Grid to make sure your chosen courses do not overlap.

We suggest making two or more schedules using the Daily Time Grid and bringing them with you to Jumpstart.  On that day you will meet with a faculty advisor, go over your schedules, and then register for the semester.  The advisor will be able to answer questions you may have about courses or your desired major, as well as to help you navigate through any closed courses (courses already filled to capacity).

If you are completely overwhelmed by this information, please contact your Enrollment Services Counselor at 800.277.5721 or reach them by email or online chat by visiting http://www.lr.edu/admissions/staff/meet-the-staff.  If you can’t reach your personal counselor, feel free to contact anyone in the Enrollment Management Division for assistance.

We look forward to hosting you on campus this June!
