ABOUT ACCOUNTING

The Accounting program at Lenoir-Rhyne provides students with specialized accounting training and basic business knowledge taught by exceptional and regionally recognized faculty. Lenoir-Rhyne’s liberal arts approach to education emphasizes communication skills and exposure to the arts, sciences, and humanities. This combination of specialized emphasis in Accounting with the general benefits of a liberal arts education equips the aspiring accountant with the necessary tools to succeed in the workplace.

Accounting majors hoping to pursue a career as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) may take additional elective courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. Graduates are eligible to sit for the CPA examination and Certified Management Accounting examinations upon completion of the program and courses required by The Examining Body.

Qualified students interested in continuing their Business education through graduate study can easily matriculate into Lenoir-Rhyne’s Master of Business Administration program. Through LR’s innovative Bridges to Dreams and Alumni Advantage programs, students who complete their undergraduate degrees at Lenoir-Rhyne University are able to complete their graduate degrees in shorter time and at significantly less expense (up to nearly half off the standard MBA degree at LR).

LEARNING OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM

Qualifying senior accounting majors are eligible for one or two semester accounting internships. Accounting firm interns are given the opportunity to gain valuable work experience outside of the classroom. As a part of the Charles M. Snipes School of Business and Economics, Accounting majors have access to the many out-of-class opportunities in Business, including student organizations, study abroad, and community outreach and research (working within a course or independently with a faculty mentor).

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

An Accounting major is an excellent route toward success in a business career. Opportunities are plentiful across a wide array of professions. It is an evolving and exciting field, given the rapid changes in public policy, technology, globalization, and market change. Options include among other areas public accounting, tax accounting, corporate accounting and bookkeeping, public sector and non-profit accounting, and auditing.

LR’s Accounting major is designed to prepare students for entry into the profession, for sitting for the CPA exams and certification, and for continuing forward with graduate education.

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS

Accounting majors at LR complete a BA degree. Students may also minor in Accounting. Additionally, students may double major (with faculty advisor approval) within most programs in the Charles M. Snipes School of Business by completing an additional 15 credit hours or more beyond the requirements for the first major. The double major furnishes students exceptional preparation for business professions.
