What will I study?

The CACREP accredited Master of Arts in Counseling is designed to prepare individuals for positions as professional counselors in agencies. A primary emphasis is placed on the development of strong clinical skills.

Upon receiving the Master of Arts in Counseling, students will meet course work requirements for eligibility to take the examination to become a National Board Certified Counselor (NCC) and Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of North Carolina. Grow with us, and enter into a profession that helps others rise as well.

Students have the opportunity to take courses on the LRU campus in Hickory, the LRU Center for Graduate Studies located in Asheville, or and the new LRU Center for Graduate Studies located in Columbia, SC. The curriculum places a primary emphasis on the development of strong clinical skills. The LRU faculty at all locations are available to meet with students and participate in their education. At this time, you can obtain your degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at all three campuses and you can obtain your degree in School Counseling in Hickory and Asheville.

How will I grow?

The program has a strong, experienced faculty and strives to emphasize both theory and practical application for students through partnerships with various community partners and clinical sites. The programs provide a strong emphasis on clinical training and application, and merges theory and praxis. All faculty members have extensive experience as Licensed Professional Counselors in clinical practice in agencies, private practices, and/or schools. All faculty members are Licensed Professional Counselors. There is a strong emphasis within the counseling program on faculty serving as mentors to students; therefore, faculty are accessible to students.

Faculty assist students in the development of a professional portfolio for use in program assessment as well as for licensure and future employment. Diversity in the student population provides unique opportunities for peer teaching and learning.

Clinical Partnership sites include:

  • Public schools, which provide specialized experiences with children
  • Residential care and assisted living facilities, which provide specialized opportunities in counseling across the life span

  • Various unique clinical community sites
