For Graduates


Location and Number of Guests

The ceremony will be held outdoors in Moretz Stadium. Attendance outdoors is open and family members will not need tickets.

Rain or Inclement Weather

In the event of unfavorable weather, a decision will be made by Friday noon whether the ceremony will need to be moved indoors to P.E. Monroe Auditorium (where tickets will be required).  In order to be prepared, you need to pick up your allotted guest tickets at the Grad Info Fair on March 25-26.  Student Marshals will be on hand to escort additional guests to several open viewing areas (where tickets are not necessary) to watch the ceremony on closed circuit television. Check the LR website at for weather-related changes. Any unclaimed rain tickets will be distributed at the Info Desk in Cromer Center beginning on Reading Day, May 8.

In Absentia

All graduates are expected to attend the commencement exercises unless you have received permission in writing from the Provost. Email


Diplomas will be withheld from those students with outstanding financial obligations to the University. Please check with the Business Office prior to Graduation. 

Only diploma covers will be handed out during the ceremony. After the ceremony has ended, you can pick up your diploma in Shuford Gym. In case of rain, you will go to the Fireside Room in Cromer Center.  Representatives from Enrollment Management will be available to hand out diplomas for one hour after commencement concludes. Note:  Friends/family members may not pick up the diploma on your behalf. 

Caps, Gowns, and Stoles

Caps, gowns, and stoles may be purchased at the Grad Info Fair on March 25-26 in Cromer Center Lobby. Afterward, they will be available in the LR Bookstore. Contact Lucy Manzanares at 828.328.7142 or

Announcement Cards & Personalized Invitations

The LR Bookstore will carry a limited number of general announcements to sell. You may also order personalized invitations and announcement cards online at

Honor Cords

Gold, silver, and white honor cords will be given for summa, magna, and cum laude graduates (respectively) during the line-up for the Baccalaureate and Commencement processionals. Other cords/pins/medallions will be allowed only if they are symbolic of campus-wide and programmatic academic honors.
